Pettersen Paces Saints in a 5-0 win over Bellarmine

Saints off to their best start since becoming a member of Division II

St. Louis – Joergen Pettersen scored a pair of goals to push the Maryville University men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Bellarmine University Friday afternoon at Maryville Field. This is the first time that the Saints have started the season with a 3-0 record since becoming a member of Division II.

What Happened – The Saints offense got off to a fast start as Helmut Florencia opened the scoring with his second goal of the year off passes from Pontus Gitselov and Vittorio Sasso to give Maryville a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Gitselov then added a goal of his own in the 22th minute from the middle of the box to increase the lead to 2-0. Things kept going in the right direction for the Saints as Pettersen slotted a shot into the far left corner of the goal to give Maryville a 3-0 advantage in the 27th minute. The Saints added a pair of insurance goals in the second half as Pettersen and Ricardo Andrade each scored to extend the Maryville lead to 5-0. With the win over the Knights (2-1-0, 0-1-1 GLVC), the Saints are off to their best start since the 1997 team opened the season with a 4-0 mark.

Up Next – Maryville concludes its four-match homestand as the Saints play host to Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon at Maryville Field. The game is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
