In its only exhibition game, the Maryville men's basketball team battled St. John's until the final minutes before the Big East squad used a late run to down the Saints 71-57.
Casey Teson sank two free throws to pull the Saints to within 59-57 with 4:31 left to play before the Red Storm pulled away in the waning minutes. The Saints converted 12 3-pointers in the tilt.
What Happened
Jordan Gary nailed a 3-pointer for the first points of the game for the Saints. St. Johns edged to a 13-3 lead before Maryville sank three consecutive triples.
Chaz Glotta drilled back-to-back 3-pointers, and
Bobby Harvey followed from behind the arc as the Saints closed to 13-12. Maryville stayed close and
Robin Thompson's layup with 4:26 left in the first half tied the score at 19-19. The Red Storm still led 28-21 but Gary sank another 3-pointer, and
Eugene Jones' layup pulled Maryville to 30-26 at halftime.
In the opening minute of the second half, Gotta splashed in another 3-pointer as the Saints surged to a 31-30 lead. St. John's rebuilt a 35-31 advantage until Teson answered from deep with consecutive 3-pointers as the Saints grabbed a 37-35 advantage with 16:46 remaining in the game. Jones sank a jumper as Maryville took its final lead of the game at 39-37 with 15 minutes to play. The Red Storm had its best run of the game and built a 51-39 lead with 11:02 to play.
Dezmond McDaniel scored five straight points as the Saints closed back to 51-44.
The Saints made a final push when Teson drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to pull back to 56-54 with 7:05 to go. He hit two free throws as Maryville again closed to within two points at 59-57 at the 4:31 mark. However, the Saints had empty trips down the stretch as the Red Storm had to rally for the win. The Maryville defense limited preseason Big East Conference Player of the Year Shamorie Ponds to 13 points on 6-of-16 shooting in the contest.
