Joplin, Mo. – The Maryville University baseball team earned a spilt on the first day of a weekend series at Turner Field in Joplin, Mo. The Saints won the opener against Illinois-Springfield 6-2 and fell to Missouri Southern 13-7 in the night cap.
Game One:
The Saints broke out an early 1-0 on the power of a
Brennan Williams solo blast with no out in the top of the second inning. Maryville added another run in the top of the fourth as
Garrett Taylor launched his first homer of the year over the left center field fence to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage over the Prairie Stars. After the homer run, Williams drilled a double and scored on a
Camdon Mercier single to extend the lead to 3-0. After UIS scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning,
Cody Klotz singled and advanced to second base on a throwing error to start the fifth inning and scored as
Drake Lubin laid down a sacrifice bunt to give the Saints a 4-1 lead. Lubin then scored on a ground out to the third baseman to give Maryville a 5-1 lead.

Game Two:
The Lions opened the contest by taking a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. Maryville cut the lead in half as
Connor Markell smashed a double into right center to score Taylor from second and get the Saints to within a run at 2-1. The Saints tied the contest in the third inning as Lubin drilled a triple to left center and scored on a
Daniel Covert single to draw the game even at 2-2. Missouri Southern broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third as the Lions plated six runs in the inning to grab an 8-2 advantage. The Lions added runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take a 13-3 lead, but the Saints scored four times in the top of the ninth to close out the game.
