Schumer Hits a Pair of Home Runs to Pace the Saints in a Sweep of Missouri S&T

Rolla, Mo. –  The Maryville baseball team drilled six home runs, including a pair from Dalton Schumer and pounded out 28 hits as the Saints opened Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a sweep of Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon at S&T Ballpark in Rolla, Mo. The Saints won the first game of the series 14-1 and earned the sweep of the Miners with a 12-5 win in the nightcap.

Game one:
Drake Lubin got things started for the Saints in the top of the first with a leadoff single and scored as Brennan Williams doubled to left field to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. Louis Niemerg drilled a triple to deep center field to score Williams and then Niemerg scored on a pass ball to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage. After the Miners scored a run in the second inning, Maryville added three more runs in the top of the third on three hits, with the big blow being a Zack Ruckman two-run single to extend the lead to 6-1. The Miners cut into the lead in the home half of the third with three runs of their own to put the score at 6-4, but that is as close as it would get as the Saints added three runs in the fifth with Garrett Taylor smashing a two-run blast to cap off another three-run inning that gave the Saints a 9-4. Maryville scored two runs in the sixth and closed out the scoring in the eighth as Dalton Schumer and Niemerg drilled back-to-back round trippers to extend the lead to 14-4.
