Connor Markell launched a pair of home runs to aid the Maryville baseball team in a split with Quincy University Saturday afternoon at QU Stadium. The Hawks hit a walk-off three-run homer to take the first game of the day, 8-7. The Saints hit three home runs in the nightcap to hold off the Hawks, 10-8.
Game one:
The Hawks struck first as they scored a run in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead, but the Saints answered in the top of the second inning.
Zack Ruckman opened the inning with a single and scored as
Cody Klotz drilled his fourth homer of the year to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage. Maryville continued to use the long ball as Markell launched his third home run over the right field wall to bring in
Dalton Schumer that gave the Saints a 4-1 lead. Quincy knotted the contest back up at 4-4 with three tallies in the third and re-took the lead with another run in the fourth to give them a 5-4 advantage. In the top of the sixth, the Saints grabbed the lead as
Drake Lubin,
Daniel Covert, and
Louis Niemerg each hit RBI singles to put Maryville out front 7-5. The Hawks bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the first game of the day.

Game two:
The Saints came out swinging in the second game of the day as
Garrett Taylor smashed his sixth home run of the season in the second inning to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. After Maryville placed runners on first and second, Lubin hit an RBI single to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage after two innings of play. Maryville used a pair of homers in the fourth inning to extend the lead as Dominic Connolly lifted a two-run blast and Markell drilled a three-run shot to right field to give the Saints a 7-1 lead. Quincy cut into the Maryville advantage with a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to make the score 7-5 and took the lead in the seventh with a three-run homer to take an 8-7 advantage. The Saints continued to battle as Connolly opened the eighth inning with a double and scored on a Quincy throwing error to tie the game at 8-8. Maryville re-took the lead as Lubin and Niemerg each drove in runs to give the Saints a 10-8 advantage as they held on for the series split.
