Despite Casey Teson's first career double-double, the Maryville men's basketball team lost an 81-70 Great Lakes Valley Conference road decision at Illinois Springfield. UIS had a one-point lead but used a late run to pull away in the final minutes. Teson finished with 11 points and a career-best 10 rebounds, while Zach Colletta notched a team-high 16 points. Jerome Davis also had double digit rebounds as he snared 10 boards.
What Happened
USI held a 17-11 advantage before Maryville took the lead with seven straight points. Robin Thompson had a three-point play, and Eugene Jones converted a layup. Zach Colletta sank two free throws to put the Saints ahead 18-17 with 8:41 left in the first half. The score was tied at 25-25 before UIS inched ahead and settled for a 37-34 lead at intermission.
The Prairie Stars scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half to build a double-digit lead over the Saints. Jones had a layup, and two free throws by Jerome Davis pulled Maryville to within eight at 52-44. Still down 59-49 at the 11:47 mark, the Saints rallied with a 10-0 run. Davis sparked the outburst with a layup and Jordan Gary knocked down consecutive jumpers. Colletta scored inside, and a Chaz Glotta jumped tied the game 59-59 with 9:10 to play. Gary added a layup and Casey Teson's three-point play boosted Maryville to a 66-61 lead. UIS answered with seven points in-a-row to jump back ahead. Colletta converted one free throw to pull Maryville to within one point at 68-67 with 4:46 remaining. However, UIS scored the next nine points to close out the game.
Zach Colletta has reached double figures in scoring over the last three games to bolster the Maryville attack. The Saints out-rebounded UIS 43-31 and grabbed 17 off the offensive glass.
