St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team could not overcome the big inning as the Saints dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Davenport Saturday afternoon at Weber Field. The Panthers scored eight runs in the final two innings of the opener en route to a 9-1 win. Davenport then broke open a tie game in the nightcap with a four run outburst in the fourth to take an 8-4 victory over Maryville.
Game One:
The Saints opened the scoring in the second inning as
Austin Tapella started the frame with a walk and moved to second when
Collin Turnbeaugh was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, Tapella scored on an infield single by
Hayden Thornton to put Maryville on top 1-0. The Panthers evened the contest with a run in the fourth to make the score 1-1.
Davenport took control of the game in the sixth as they scored four times to take a 5-1 lead. The Panthers added four more runs in the top of the sixth and retired six of the last Maryville batters to claim the win.

Game Two:
The Panthers struck first in the nightcap with three runs in the third frame to take an early 3-0 lead, but the Saints answered in the home half of the inning. Tapella drew a one-out walk and moved to second as
Nick Guerra reached first on a fielding error.
Alex Hoff cleared the bases with a three-run blast over the left field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
Davenport responded in the top of the fourth with four runs to re-take the lead and added a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-3. Maryville tried to rally in the seventh as
Dominic Connolly drew a walk and scored as Tapella ripped a double into the gap in left center to make the score 8-4. The Panthers retired the final two batters of the game to end the rally.
