Men's Volleyball Takes Set Three at No. 11 Loyola Before Ramblers Prevail in Four Sets

Box Score Chicago – The Maryville men's volleyball team won one set and extended the match in the fourth but No. 11 Loyola Chicago held off a determined effort by the Saints 25-8, 25-13, 21-25, 32-30. Victor Ganev topped the Saints with 10 kills, while Jacob Fischer had nine kills on 15 swings without an error for a .600 hitting percentage.

The Saints scored two of the first three points of the match on a kill by Luke Van Handel and one by Fischer. However, the Ramblers went on a spree and built up a double-digit lead. Drew Rogers had a kill, and Fischer finished a set from Cameron Chambers to pull the Saints to 17-8 but Maryville never got any closer. In the second set, Fischer opened with a kill before Loyola scored seven straight. Van Handel put down a kill to end the LUC run. However, the Ramblers scored five straight to take control.
 
Down 2-0 in the third set, Maryville reeled off four straight points to surge ahead. Van Handel started the run with a kill, and after an LUC error, Rogers pounded down a kill. Ganev and Fischer combined on a block to give the Saints a 4-2 edge. The Saints stayed in front and went up 12-8 on another block by Ganev and Fischer. The set was tied three more times, the last at 16-all. A Loyola service error put the Saints ahead 17-16, and Maryville stayed in front the rest of the way for a 25-21 win.
 
After LUC opened the fourth with a kill, the Saints had their best run of the night with five consecutive points. After a Rambler error, Ganev and Fischer had a block. Van Handel served up an ace before Rogers put down a kill. Ganev cranked in a kill to give the Saints a 5-1 advantage. Maryville kept Loyola at bay and took an 11-6 lead following an LUC miscue. The Ramblers rallied and tied the set at 11-11. Maryville went back ahead by two after a Loyola service error and an ace by Fleischer. The Saints scored two straight to grab a 21-19 lead that eventually got the Saints to set point. Loyola tied the score at 24-24 before the contest was tied six times. Fischer's kill deadlocked the score at 30-30 but the Ramblers scored two straight to win the match.
