LEBANON, Ill. – The No. 13-ranked Maryville Saints faced their biggest test since entering the
top 25 of the USC rankings: a road battle at the McKendree Bearcats. The Saints, powered by a second-half goal from
Emily Doane, extended their season-long unbeaten streak, finishing the day with a 1-1 draw.
Agnes Vilen, the Saints' freshman goalkeeper, was a fortress between the posts late in the match, recording four saves, two of which came in the final four minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the first time this season, the Saints found themselves trailing after a 25th-minute goal by the Bearcats put them on their heels. Despite four more shots in the first half, the score stood 1-0 in favor of the home team at halftime.
As the sun set in Lebanon, Ill., the Saints turned up the pressure.
Ulrika Bredin and
Elsa Nilson-Hurtig each tallied shots on goal before a midfield pass from
Lexi Gentry set up Doane for the equalizer.
Action remained tight from there, with Nilson-Hurtig coming within inches of the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute.
