Ayer Notches Career-High 22 Points but Big Third Quarter Pushes UMSL Past Saints

Normandy, Mo.  – The Maryville women's basketball team led at halftime but host Missouri-St. Louis used a big third quarter to down the Saints 75-53 Monday evening. Adylan Ayer tallied a career-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting to highlight the Maryville efforts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 10-7 in the first, Ayer nailed a 3-pointer and added a layup to put the Saints up. Alicia Burgos scored inside for a 14-10 advantage. Later, Burgos converted a layup, and a bucket by Olivia Hahn put the Saints on top 18-15. UMSL crawled back ahead until Ayer again splashed in a 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup. She tacked on another triple for a 26-22 lead. Gracie Stugart sank a midrange jumper as Maryville took its biggest lead at 28-22. UMSL closed in and trimmed the deficit down to 32-29 at the break.

However, the Tritons opened the second half on a 12-1 burst to jump ahead. Maryville scored four straight as Madyson Rigdon made two free throws, and an Ayer layup trimmed the UMSL lead to 47-40. The Tritons answered by scoring the final six points of the quarter and went up 53-40. The Saints were unable to get the gap down to single digits in the fourth quarter as UMSL closed out the game.
