LAKELAND, FLA. – Despite 22 points off the bench from
Lindsey Schadewalt, a Maryville women's basketball rally fell short as host Florida Southern held on for a 90-85 win to close the Mocs Christmas Classic in Lakeland, Fla. Schadewalt hit nine of her 15 attempts from the field en route to her second-highest scoring total of the season.
Claire Rake converted five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing at halftime by double digits, the Saints mounted a rally in the third quarter.
Faith Hawthorne scored the first three points after halftime, and Rake drained a 3-pointer as Maryville closed the gap to 50-45. Later, Rake and
Gracie Stugart sank consecutive 3-pointers to pull the Saints to within one point at 58-57. Schadewalt made a jumper and two free throws to tie the game before Stugart made a free throw to push the Saints ahead 62-61. FSC answered with two triples and took a 67-63 edge into the fourth.
Rake hit a trey early in the fourth to bring the deficit to one, and a jumper by Schadewalt made it 69-68 with 8:40 to play. The Mocs rebuilt an 82-73 advantage before the Saints made another charge.
Madyson Rigdon rained down a 3-pointer, and
Adylan Ayer scored in the paint. Rake dialed up a trey from dee to chop the lead down to 82-81. Rigdon added a drive for a bucket to bring the Saints to within 84-83 with 1:52 remaining. After a defensive stop, the Saints had a look to tie the contest but missed. FSC scored on a bucket with less than a minute to play but Maryville's attempt to tie misfired and the Mocs went up by five. Stugart answered with a layup but FSC converted two free throws in the waning seconds to hold on for the victory.
