ST. LOUIS – Home Runs from
Elias Stevens,
Jack Zebig, and
Colin Bergmann propelled Maryville University to a 13-9 win over Northwood University in the home opener on Friday.
Northwood Recap
Northwood put a pair of runs on Maryville starter
Jacob Kroeger in the top of the first inning, but he settled in during the second inning. The Saints responded bottom of the second with a bases-clearing three-RBI triple from
Jack Zebig, RBI singles from
Colin Bergmann and
Michael Gould, and a two-run home run from
Elias Stevens to open a 7-2 lead.
Zebig, in the middle of a six-RBI performance, picked up another bases-loaded hit in the third inning to score
Jacob Hager. With the ducks still on the pond, Bergmann drove in a run with a single through the hole and Gould followed up with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to eight runs.
The Timberwolves got two more unearned runs in the fourth to cut into the lead. Kroeger finished his day after five innings of work, nine strikeouts, and two earned runs allowed.
The hit parade continued in the bottom of the seventh when
Andy Bunton singled with two outs and came home to score on a two-run home run from Zebig. Bergman went back-to-back with him with a solo home run of his own to make it 13-4.
Northwood continued fighting back, getting four runs in the eighth and one in the ninth off the Saints' bullpen, but
Philip Reinhardt sealed up a 13-9 final for his team's third win of the season.
