Saints Use Back-to-Back Blasts to Top Quincy in Game Two of Saturday Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University baseball split a doubleheader with Quincy University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints fell 9-5 in game one and erased a big deficit with a seven-run sixth inning to win game two 9-5.

Quincy Recap
Maryville starter Ben Gregory set the first two hitters of the game down in order but found trouble after hitting Dustin Dupont with a pitch. Austin Simpson then stepped in a hit a double down the right field line to score Dupont from first for a 1-0 Quincy lead. The Hawks added five more on two hits in the second to extend the lead to 6-0.

Matt Schuler singled to lead off the bottom of the third, Andy Bunton walked, and Jack Zebig hit a three-run shot to cut the lead in half. Still with no outs, Michael Gould and Elias Stevens both walked forcing Quincy to go to the bullpen.

Tim Reinholz came in and got his first batter to ground into a double play and his second batter to ground out to shortstop to maintain a 6-3 lead.

Three more runs were added to the Hawk lead in the fourth before Maryville struck back with RBI singles from Bunton and Zebig in the bottom half of the fourth.

Good work from the Quincy bullpen held the game at 9-5 until Roman Harrison closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh to make the score final.

Game Two Recap
Maryville starting pitcher Ben Prywitch tight-roped out of danger in the top of the first after allowing a two-out double to Dupont, and he was rewarded with a lead in the bottom half. Michael Gould tripled to left-center with one out and scored on a wild pitch to put his team up 1-0.

Quincy got two runs on three hits in the second and padded the lead in the third with Simpson's first home run of the afternoon. Another Simpson home run in the fifth, a two-run shot, put the Hawks up 5-1. Colin Bergmann got things going in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out double and scored on Josh Herget's single to left field.

The comeback bid continued in the sixth when Matt Arnold walked, Bunton reached on an error, and Zebig singled through the right side. Arnold scored on a wild pitch before Gould ripped a three-run home run to left to put the Saints up 6-5. Elias Stevens went back-to-back with him with a solo home run to dead center for an insurance run. Maryville eventually batted around and got two more runs on Arnold's two-RBI single.
