ROMEOVILLE, Ill. –
Ben Gregory stifled Lewis University on Saturday afternoon, allowing just one earned run in over seven innings in the 8-3 Maryville baseball win.
Michael Gould and
Elias Stevens provided the offense with a home run each, improving the Saints' record to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
Â
Lewis Recap
Maryville scored right away in the top of the first inning when
Jack Zebig led off with a single and came home to score on a two-run home run from
Michael Gould in the next at-bat. Starting pitcher
Ben Gregory responded by setting down the first six batters he faced in order.
Â
In the third, Lewis advanced a runner to third base, but Gregory worked out with a line drive to third base to keep the Flyers off the board.
Â
Still leading 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning,
Jacob Hager led off with a walk and scored on a balk a few batters later. Stevens was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning before bases-loaded walks from
Josh Herget and
Colin Bergmann extended the lead to 6-0.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Gregory got two quick outs before a single, a wild pitch, and another single put runners on first and third with two outs. The sophomore from Granger, Ind., again tight-roped out of danger with a groundball on a 0-1 pitch to hold the Flyers silent.
Â
Gregory walked a batter and got a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth when
Pat Evers decided to call in
Philip Reinhardt from the bullpen. Lewis scored two runs in the inning on a two-run shot from Mikey Kocen to pull the game to 6-2.
Â
Gregory's final line for the game was 7.1 innings, one earned five hits, and four strikeouts.
Â
Stevens slugged a two-run home run to center field in the top of the ninth to get those runs back and
Braden Smith finalized an 8-3 final score in the bottom of the ninth.
