ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Maryville University baseball won both games of a doubleheader over Lewis University on Sunday to claim a 3-1 series win. The Saints move to 17-7 overall in 2024 and 10-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Game One Recap
Maryville starting pitcher
Ben Prywitch worked out of danger in the bottom of the first inning with a couple of runners on and one out with a strikeout and a pop-out. His offense backed him up in the top of the second on an
Andy Bunton two-RBI double and an RBI single from
Michael Gould.
Â
Lewis doubled home a run in the second to cut the lead down to two.
Jack Zebig restored that run with an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth after
Colin Bergmann and Bunton singled in front of him.

The Flyers made it 4-3 in the fifth before an RBI double from
Elias Stevens in the top of the sixth made it 5-3. In the seventh,
Noah Harbin was called on out of the bullpen and he set Lewis down in order for his third save of the season.

Ben Prywitch picked up the win after five innings of work, three strikeouts, and three earned runs.
Griffin King secured a hold with a scoreless inning of work in the sixth.

Game Two Recap
Gould and Stevens got on base in front of
Jacob Hager with one out in the top of the first and the Maryville third baseman ripped an RBI double to left.
Dominic Sharp singled home two more in the next at-bat to make it 3-0. Later in the inning,
Matt Arnold lifted a fly ball to left field with one out to score Sharp from third for the fourth run.

Lewis began chipping away at the lead with one run in the second and third innings. Now ahead 4-3 in the fourth, Maryville got a run on an error, a sacrifice fly from Gould, and a two-out RBI double from Sharp to extend the lead to 7-3.

The Flyers got another run back in the bottom of the fourth and
Matt Schuler slugged his third home run of the season in the seventh.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Lewis worked a pair of walks to lead off the inning down to their final three outs.
Pat Evers called in
Braden Smith to work out of the jam and he got a strikeout of his first batter. Another walk loaded the bases and a single plated a run. In the next at-bat, George Bilecki drove in two more to pull the game to 8-7.

With the tying run on second base, Smith worked a strikeout and a groundout to end the game with an 8-7 final. The freshman from Byron, Ill., picked up the first save of his career and helped Maryville to a 3-1 series win over the Flyers.
