Saints Fall Short Twice Against Hawks on Saturday

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University dropped two conference games to Rockhurst University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks took game one with a 6-2 final and earned a 12-8 comeback victory with a pair of five-run innings in game two.

Game One Recap
Rockhurst jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first three innings on an RBI single in the first, a solo home run from Dakota Hanna in the second, and three more runs in the third.

In the bottom of the third, Camden Ruby reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI double from Andy Bunton. He then advanced to third on a groundout and scored after Dominic Sharp put a ball in play.

The Hawks got another run in the fourth which further backed starting pitcher Michael Laudando's impressive outing. Still trailing 6-2 in the seventh, the Saints loaded the bases with two outs but Laudando wrapped up the complete game victory with a flyout to right field.

Maryville jumped on the visiting starting pitcher in game one with four runs in the first inning. Sharp singled home two runs before a pair of bases-loaded walks put Rockhurst in a 4-0 deficit.

A solo home run from Hanna in the second cut into the lead in the top of the second and Elias Stevens matched it with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left field in the bottom half.

In the third, Rockhurst forced the Saints to make a call to the bullpen after loading the bases and allowing a run to score on a hit-by-pitch. Luke Feucht welcomed the new arm with a single up the middle. They went on to score six in total on a pair of RBI groundouts and an RBI double from Adonis Forte.

Forte added to the lead in the sixth with a solo home run, but the Saints did not go down without a fight. With six outs remaining to make a comeback, Matt Schuler clubbed a pinch-hit home run to pull the Saints within one. Bunton laid down a bunt single down the third base line to bring up Jack Zebig who put his team ahead with a two-run blast.

Now ahead 8-7 in the top of the seventh and final frame, Maryville gave up a walk and a pair of singles to load the bases with one out. Another single through the left side made it 9-8, a single to right field made it 10-8, and an error allowed two more to score.
