Softball Splits Day with Rockhurst

ST. LOUIS – In its first time home during the Chanin Billings-era of Maryville Softball, the Saints split with the Rockhurst Hawks in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Cora Boyle went the distance in game one, earning another complete game with just three hits and a run to her total. She pushed the limits, starting game two in the circle, ending her day after the fourth inning for a total of 11 innings of pitching action from the freshman.

In her return, Isabella Garcia tallied three RBIs on three hits. Emily Corona was the extra-base hit queen, tallying two triples and a double on the day.

GAME 1 | MARYVILLE 4, ROCKHURST 1
After a clean first two frames by both starters, Maryville finally cracked across the first run. Corona began the party, with a double to centerfield, which later turned into a run from Garcia's first RBI of the day.

That 1-0 lead held all the way into the fifth, when, yet again, Corona got the Saints going, tripling to right center. Garcia, after a Jenna Kosnoff walk and stolen base, sent her shortstop home for the second time with a single up the middle, leaving it 2-0.

Just a batter later, Kaitlyn Wagner hammered one up the middle, scoring two for a four-run lead for the Saints.

The Hawks attempted a response in the sixth, plating one, but the power of the young gun Boyle was too much as she closed the door in the seventh in three batters.

GAME 2 | ROCKHURST 5, MARYVILLE 4
Battling sunset, the Hawks and Dawgs moved quick, with both scoring in the first inning. After runs in the fourth and the fifth by the visitors, Maryville responded with a three-spot. Kosnoff was the culprit of the tying run, slapping a laser down the left field line, sending both Peyton Deakin and Emily Erb home. Wagner grabbed another RBI just two batters later, scoring Corona from third with a sacrifice fly.

A two-run jack by the Hawks in the sixth was the punch that ended the game as Maryville could not find a response.

UP NEXT
The Saints are back at it on Sunday, March 9, battling William Jewell at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. in GLVC action.
