Saints Conclude Home Opening Weekend with Split Versus Jewell

ST. LOUIS – The Maryville softball team saw its second-straight doubleheader split in its home-opening weekend. The Saints battled the William Jewell Cardinals, falling in game one 7-5 while swiping game two with a score of 4-2.

Isabella Garca, for the second day in a row, brought power to the Saints lineup, tallying four RBIs on the day, with two extra-base hits.

GAME 1 | WJC 7, MARYVILLE 5
After a Cardinal run in the first inning, the Saints responded in a big way, plating four in the bottom half of the inning. It started with the first double for Garcia as she sent home both Jenna Kosnoff home with one swing of the bat. Situational hitting prevailed from there as Kaitlyn Wagner, Marley Williamson and Mandi Lenon all tallied RBIs to leave it 4-1 after one.

The Cardinals chipped away off Cora Boyle in the circle, plating one in the second and the fourth, with a Saints response in the bottom half of the fourth. It stayed 5-3 until the seventh, where the visitors exploded for four runs to leave it 7-5.

The Saints brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to capitalize, losing the opener.

GAME 2 | MARYVILLE 4, WJC 2
Pitching shined in game two as Mercedes Delgado was dominant through five innings of work. The Saints granted her three runs in the third, with Williamson and Garcia both grabbing ribbies to make it 3-0.

Jewell made it interesting, scoring a run in the sixth, one that the Saints responded to with one in the bottom half of the inning. Lexi Goeringer came in after the WJC run in the sixth, closing out the final 1 & 2/3 innings of work to send the Saints fans home happy.

COACHES CORNER
Head Coach Chanin Billings on the weekend…
"It's great to play at home and its good to get our team playing in front of a home crowd. I think they did a good job today coming back and answering back and getting the win. I think we had some pitchers step up today and really help us get that one."

Billings on Delgado and Goeringer stepping up…
"I think Cora threw 11 innings yesterday, seven today, throwing great. Both Mercedes and Lexi did a great job coming in, Mercedes went the long distance and then Lexi came in with a clutch relief spot and really helped get us the win."

UP NEXT
The Saints head on the road this week to Missouri Southern on Wednesday, March 12, with action from Joplin set for 12 & 2 p.m.
