Missouri Baptist Holds Off Saints in Volleyball Action

Missouri Baptist made the short trip over to Marvyille and emerged with a 3-0 victory Thursday in nonconference volleyball action. The visitors, who are ranked No. 15 in NAIA, registered a 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 in Moloney Arena.
 
The Spartans took an early 3-0 but the Saints forged a 4-4 tie. The set was tied 8-8 before Maryville reeled off four straight points. Mikeala Lahm notched a kill, and MBU committed an error. Laura Welling pounded down a kill, and Taryn Trubich tipped in a kill for a 12-8 Saints lead. Maryville still led 14-11 after a kill by Demi Maniaci but the Spartans answered with eight straight points to surge into the lead. The Saints got as close as four points after a Hana Michael ace, but Missouri Baptist held on for the win.
 
In set two, Missouri Baptist edged out to a 9-5 lead before a 4-0 burst by the Saints tied the score at 9-9. Welling ignited the run with a kill, and MBU committed an error. After a hitting miscue by the Spartans, Maniaci and Samantha Callahan combined on a block for the Saints. The Spartans answered with a 6-0 to take control. Down five, the Saints tallied three unanswered points but Missouri Baptist escaped with a 25-18 lead.
 
The Saints scored the first three points of the third set before the Spartans got on the board. A kill by Lahm handed the Saints a 5-2 lead until Missouri Baptist answered with five straight scores to go up 7-5. After two straight MBU errors, the duo of Maniaci and Callahan again notched a block to give the Saints an 8-7 edge. The Spartans retook the lead with four consecutive points and did not give the lead up as they improved to 27-1 on the year.
 
Michael led the Saints (3-19) with seven kills, while Welling added six. Callahan and Manicai tied for the team lead with three blocks. Maryville returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan for a “Think Pink” night.
