The Saints, who won a thrilling five-setter Saturday night against Kentucky Wesleyan, started off the match by scoring.
Hana Michael recorded a kill on the first swing of the day, and USI suffered two straight hitting errors. The visitors slowly inched back into the set and created a 5-5 tie. At 8-8,
Samantha Callahan’s kill was the first of three straight Saints points, but USI again tied the match at 17.
Julia Greaves’ kill pushed Maryville back ahead, and back-to-back kills by Michael and Callahan put the margin at 20-17. USI made one more push to get to 21-20, but Callahan had a kill to start a 4-1 to close the set and a 25-21 win.
USI used a 7-1 burst to take the early lead in set two and eventually built a 12-5 cushion. After a Screaming Eagles service error,
Mikaela Lahm and Michael recorded a block. Lahm’s kill on the next point drew Maryville to 12-8, but USI scored four of the next five points and maintained that margin the rest of the set.
The visitors held a 5-4 lead until reeling off five straight points to take charge in the third set.
Demi Maniaci had a kill to end the USI run, but the Saints could not get any closer as the Screaming Eagles eased to the win in the set. In the final set, neither team led by more than two until USI edged to a 10-7 margin. After a Michael kill, the Screaming Eagles scored five of the next six points and eventually closed out the match.
