Saints Challenge Miners But Come up Short in Three Sets

The Maryville volleyball team challenged Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader Missouri S&T, but the Miners held off repeated Saints charges to win in three sets. The Miners prevailed 25-18, 25-13, 25-20.
 
In the opening set, the score was tied 5-5 before the Saints scored three of the next four points to surge ahead. Laura Welling started the run with a kill, and Samantha Callahan followed suit. After a Miners point, the Saints went up 8-6 after a Missouri S&T hitting error. The Miners slowly rallied and edged ahead 10-9. Maryville tied the score 10-10 after an S&T miscue, but Missouri S&T scored five straight points to jump ahead. The Saints trailed 20-12 before making a comeback. Welling’s kill sparked a 6-0 for Maryville. After an S&T hitting error, Julia Greaves had a block and then combined with Callahan on a block to pull Maryville to 20-16. The Miners suffered another hitting error and Greaves’ kill drew the Saints to 20-18. However, the Miners scored the final five points to hold off the Saints.
 
The Miners jumped to an early lead in set two by scoring nine of the first 10 points. Greaves had a kill to try and stop Missouri S&T’s run but the Miners stretched their margin to double-digits. Maryville was unable to string together a run as the Miners took a 2-0 lead.
 
Hana Michael began the third set with a kill and Maryville took a quick 3-1 lead. Mikaela Lahm had a kill and an S&T error gave the Saints a two-point lead. The Miners tied the set and built a 6-4 advantage. Missouri S&T led 10-6 before the Saints answered with three straight points. Greaves sandwiched kills around a block by Lahm and Michael to pull Maryville to 10-9. The Miners rebuilt a 12-10 lead until Maryville reeled off a 4-0 charge. Michael and Lahm had back-to-back kills, and Michael drilled down a shot to tie the set. Taryn Trubich tipped in a shot to give the Saints a 13-12 lead. Missouri S&T knotted the score at 14 before the Saints went up 16-14 after an S&T error and a kill from Welling. Another mistake by the Miners gave the Saints a 17-15 cushion but Missouri S&T scored four straight points to retake the lead. Maryville got as close as 20-19 but the Miners (15-10 overall, 11-1 GLVC) tallied five of the last six points to close out the match.
 
Lahm led the Saints (4-21 overall, 2-10 GLVC) with eight kills, and Jamie Kloss finished with a match-high 21 digs. Maryville is back in action Saturday at Drury.
