The Maryville men’s soccer team was unable to break through the William Jewell defense as the visiting Cardinals posted a 2-0 win Friday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Cardinals scored the only goal they would need when Chris Binns hit a long, breakaway pass to Matt McDevitt on the left wing. Saints goalie James Hohenstein came off his line to challenge the shot, but McDevitt deftly put enough air onto his shot as it rolled into the net for a 1-0 WJC lead at the 11:32 mark. Tyler Luebbert had an outstanding scoring opportunity but Joe Keeven came up with the save to keep the Cardinals on top.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Cardinals had two strong scoring chances snuffed out by Hohenstein. In the 78th minute, Luebbert had another shot turned aside by the WJC keeper. The Cardinals tacked on an insurance score when McDevitt scored again in the 83rd minute. The Saints could not generate another good scoring opportunity as they fell to 2-6 overall, 2-3 in the league. William Jewell improves to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the GLVC. The Saints next play Sunday when they host No. 5 Rockhurst in a 2:30 p.m. game.
