Maryville’s bid to build a two-match winning streak was denied as Missouri S&T downed the Saints in three straight sets Saturday afternoon. The Miners won by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-16 to post their seventh straight victory and remain top the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division.
In the opening set, the Miners scored the first four points of the match and quickly built up a double-digit lead. The Saints were unable to get their offense untracked as the Miners eased to a 1-0 lead. The Saints started the second set by scoring three straight points. After a Missouri S&T error,
Laura Welling had a kill and
Mikaela Lahm finished a pass from
Taryn Trubich for a 3-0 Maryville lead. The Miners knotted the set at 4-4 and eventually built a four-point lead. Welling terminated a Miner’s overpass as Maryville closed to 14-12 but that was as close as the Saints would get.
The Miners tallied five of the first six points in the third set before back-to-back kills by Welling and Lahm drew Maryville to 5-3. Later,
Samantha Callahan finished a pass from Trubich as the Saints closed to 6-5. The Miners scored three of the next four points and pushed their advantage to five points. A block by Hana Michael and Lahm and a service ace by
Kayla Huesgen cut the deficit to 16-13 but the Miners kept the Saints at bay the rest of the way.
Welling, who recorded a career-high 14 kills yesterday in the win over Drury, followed up with 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage for the Saints (2-14, 1-6).
Hannah Seitter finished with a match-high 13 digs, while Michael added 10 digs. Callahan hit .417 for the match with seven kills on just 12 swings. Alison Mueller led the Miners (11-5, 7-0) with 11 kills. The Saints out-dug the Miners 50-47.
