Late Tally Defeats Men's Soccer 2-1 at William Jewell

William Jewell's Chad Newman scored with one minute to go in the game to hand the Maryville men's soccer team a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Liberty, Mo. The loss spoiled the first goal of the season by Maryville's Nick Doherty.

The Cardinals put two early shots on goal but Saints goalie Josh Richter made two stops to keep the game scoreless. Kory Clawson had a shot misfire wide, and Lance Kohler also just missed midway through the first half. Bryan Jones put the Cardinals ahead in the 38th minute, and WJC settled for a one-goal margin at the break.

The Saints started the second half with a flurry and put four shots on the WJC net. Maryville finally drew level in the the 61st minute when Doherty collected a pass from Clawson and fired it into the William Jewell net. The Saints continued to carry the play and nearly took the lead on shots by Clawson and Doherty.

However, nearing the final minute of the game, the Cardinals earned a corner kick, and Newman scored the game winner at the 88:57 minute to deal the Saints a difficult loss.
