The Maryville volleyball was looking to topple one of the GLVC West Division powers but Rockhurst held off a challenge from the Saints 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17) Friday evening at Moloney Arena.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in set one before the Saints made a late charge with a 5-0 run, but Rockhurst held off Maryville. Set two saw Rockhurst score the first four points before Maryville got on the scoreboard after a Hawks hitting error. The Saints twice cut the lead to four but were unable to get any closer.

The Saints took their first lead of the night in the third set when
Hana Michael pounded down a kill.
Grace Balcerak and a Rockhurst miscue handed the Saints a 6-4 edge. After a Hawks kill, the Saints reeled off four straight points.
Taryn Trubich tipped in a shot to start the run, and
Jordan McKinley added a kill. After a Balcerak finish, she teamed with
Julia Greaves on a block for a 10-5 lead. Rockhurst rallied to tie the set at 11 but a
Mikaela Lahm kill and a Hawks' hitting mistake rebuild a 13-11 Saints lead. Maryville still led 22-19 and scored the last three points capped by a
Hannah Seitter ace to take the third set.

The fourth set was close with Rockhurst leading 12-9 before the Hawks scored three straight to ease ahead. Down 19-12, the Saints tallied with a 5-0 burst.
Demi Maniaci started the run, and Balcerak followed with a kill. She and McKinley had a block, and after a Rockhurst error, Trubich served an ace to pull the Saints to 19-17. However, the Hawks closed out the set and the match to improve to 14-4 overall, 8-2 in the GLVC.

Lahm led the Saints with nine kills and hit .333 in the contest to go along with four blocks. Balcerak had eight kills and no errors on 16 swings, while
Ali Lampen paced Maryville with 23 digs. Alyssa Arnold topped the Hawks with 16 kills, and Victoria Mahl finished with 25 digs.

The Saints slip to 6-15 overall, 1-9 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Saturday with a contest against William Jewell at 4 p.m., followed by a non-conference match at 6 p.m. versus Pittsburg State.
