Career Day by Maniaci Leads Saints Past Quincy

Senior Demi Manicai made her final match in a Maryville jersey a memorable one as she recorded a career-high 17 kills while hitting .441 to lead the Saints to a thrilling five-set victory over Quincy on Senior Day. The Saints took the season finale 25-20, 28-26, 24-26, 17-25, 15-9 to close the season with a two-game winning streak.
 
Set one was tied at 15 before the Saints took charge with four straight points. Hana Michael started the burst with a kill, and Mikaela Lahm followed. Kelsey Warden served an ace and Maniaci had a kill for a 19-15 lead. The Hawks pulled to 23-20 but Maryville tallied the last two points. Set two featured 13 ties and six lead changes. The contest was tied at 26-26 before two straight miscues by Quincy handed the Saints a 2-0 lead.
 
The Hawks led early in set three and were up 16-15 until the Saints tallied four straight points. After a QU service error, Welling had two straight kills, and Julia Greaves kill handed Maryville a 19-16 lead. Eventually, the Saints had two match points at 24-22 but Quincy scored the final four points of the set for a 26-24 win.  Down in set four 8-3, the Saints rallied to forge a tie at 10-10. Quincy took a 17-13 lead before the Saints rallied to score three straight and get to 17-16. However, the Hawks tallied eight of the last nine points to force a fifth set.
 
The Hawks scored the first point of the finale but the Saints responded with six in a row to surge ahead. Welling had a kill, and Quincy had an attack error. Lahm and Maniaci teamed for a block and three straight QU hitting errors boosted the Maryville lead to 6-1. The Hawks scored three straight to get back into the set and pulled to 9-7. After the teams traded scores, Taryn Trubich and Lahm had back-to-back kills for a 12-8 lead. Quincy scored again to make it 12-9 before the Saints closed out the match. Lahm had a kill, and after a Seitter service ace, Lahm ended the match with a kill for a 15-9 win.
 
Maniaci broke her previous career best of 14 and added three blocks on the day. Welling added 13 kills, while Michael finished with 10 kills and seven digs. Lahm had nine kills and a career-high nine blocks to cap her playing career. Fellow senior Greaves chipped in four kills and one block on the day. Ali Lampen tallied 31 digs to bring her single-season digs record to 715. Samantha Haegele and Carly Schmitt led Quincy (9-21, 3-15 Great Lakes Valley Conference) with 14 kills apiece.
 
The Saints finish the season at 10-23 overall, 3-15 in the GLVC. Their 10 wins are the most since moving up to NCAA Division II.
