Saints Hold UWP to Just .025 Hitting Percentage in Sweep

The Saints volleyball team posted its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season with a sweep over visiting Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon at Moloney Arena. Maryville recorded a 26-24, 25-12, 25-20 win and held UW-Parkside to just a .025 team hitting percentage, the lowest by a Saints opponent this season.
 
The Saints scored the first three points of the match and held the advantage for nearly the entire set before the Rangers rallied late. Maryville was up 18-11 but UWP slowly rallied and tied the set at 23-23. The Rangers scored to reach set point before the Saints rallied with three straight points. Julia Greaves pounded down a kill, and UWP had a hitting error. Ali Lampen then served an ace at set point to give the Saints a 26-24 win.
 
Maryville jumped out of the gate again to open set two by scoring the first four points. The Saints held a 7-4 cushion before scoring seven straight points to take control. The Rangers committed a serving error then had a hitting error to start the Maryville burst. Greaves finished with a kill, and the Saints scored three consecutive points. After a Grace Balcerak kill, Taryn Trubich's service ace built a 14-4 lead. UWP got as close as 18-9 but the Saints scored five straight points and cruised to the win.
 
Wisconsin-Parkside held a 7-4 lead in set three before the Saints responded with four straight points to inch ahead. Laura Welling had three kills during the run to key the attack. Maryville was up 11-10 before three straight kills gave them a margin of 14-10. Greaves, Mikaela Lahm and Samantha Callahan all finished off plays. The Saints used another midgame burst for an 18-12 lead. The Rangers mounted a late comeback and trimmed the margin to 22-20, but the Saints closed out the match with three straight points. After a Welling kill, Greaves terminated to reach match point. Balcerak and Callahan then teamed up for the match-ending block as the Saints ended a three-match skid.
 
The Saints improve to 6-9 overall, 1-4 in the league. Greaves paced the Saints with nine kills and hit .304 in the match, while Welling also had nine kills. Lampen finished with 18 digs to lead the Saints defense. Rebecca Roembke and Lisa Gregerson led the Rangers with six kills apiece, and Sarah Mlachnik added 16 digs.
