The women's tennis team traveled to the west side of the state to take on Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State Friday in St. Joseph, Mo. The Saints were edged by 5-3 scores in both matches on the day.
In the first contest, Rebekah Anderson and Kine Kleppe recorded the first win of the day with an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles. Missouri Western took the remaining two doubles matches to grab the lead heading to singles. Puck Vlaskamp notched a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, and Andrea Fandino was credited with a win at the fourth singles slot. However, the Saints were unable to pick up any more singles wins as the Griffons closed out the match.
In the finale versus Northwest Missouri State, Maryville jumped out to the lead by taking the top two doubles matches. Vlaskamp and Anne Lutz held on for an 8-6 win at the top doubles spot, and Kleppe and Anderson cruised to the win at No. 2 with an 8-2 count. The Bearcats came back with strong play in singles. Katie Tietman pulled out a 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-1), 10-4 win in the sixth singles slot. NMSU took the remaining singles matches to rally for the win.
