In a closely contested dual, the top-ranked Maryville wrestling team was edged by No. 11 McKendree 21-18 Wednesday in a matchup held in Edwardsville, Ill. The Saints are back in action Thursday at home as they host nearby foe Missouri Baptist at 7 p.m. in Moloney Arena.

In the opening bout, Jaret Singh got the Saints started with a 9-5 win at 125 for an early 3-0 lead. McKendree won a close match at 133 to tie the match, and the Bearcats went ahead 9-3 after the Saints had to take a forfeit at 141 to fall behind 9-3.
Keenan Hagerty pulled the Saints back even with a fall in his 149 match. McKendree won the contest at 157 to retake the lead. Nick Haferkamp, who is ranked fourth at 165, edged Maryville's Dimitri Willis, the No. 2 wrestler in the weight class, by a 6-4 count as the Bearcats extended their lead to 15-9.
Maryville got another pin as Zab Wahle recorded a late fall in the third period to again rally the Saints to a 15-15 deadlock. However, the Bearcats took the next two matches to grab a 21-15 team lead heading to the finale. Donnell Walker recorded a 4-3 win in a tiebreaker at heavyweight but was not able to amass enough team points as the Saints dropped their first dual of the season 21-18.
"McKendree outperformed us tonight, and you have to give them credit," Saints head coach Mike Denney said. "They came after us. Having to forfeit a weight hurt us which gave them six points. We just have to regroup and be ready to perform against Missouri Baptist. There is still a lot season left."
