Game Recap: Baseball | | St. Louis

Baseball Sweeps Pair from Lincoln 4-2 and 10-5

Maryville's baseball squad swept a pair of contests from state-foe Lincoln on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints tipped the Blue Tigers 4-2 in the opener then used a big inning en route to a 10-5 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

Mike Wilkinson tripled leading off the bottom of the second. After a walk by Kaleb Depew, Mitch Carriger singled up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Later, Garrett Taylor had a fielder's choice that brought home Depew.  Troy Payton's single chased Carriger home for a 3-0 lead.  After the Blue Tigers pulled two runs back in the top of the sixth, the Saints tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Depew singled and took second on a LU error. Carriger pushed Depew to third on a sac bunt, and Tyler Catlett's sac fly plated the final 4-2 margin for the Saints. Robbie Gordon allowed just two hits over four innings and recorded six strikeouts to pick up the win for Maryville.

In the finale, the Saints exploded for eight runs on five hits to end the suspense early. In the bottom of the second, Garrett Jones' fielder's choice with the bases loaded put the Saints on the scoreboard. Later, with the bases still full, Zach Ruckman's single scored two more runs. Andrew Naegeli also recorded a fielder's choice to bring home the fourth run of the inning. Ruckman eventually came around to steal home, and doubles by Dalton Schumer and Evan Reister combined to chase home three more scores. Ruckman finished the game with four RBIs, while Depew recorded four hits.

The Blue Tigers earned one run back in the top of the third before the Saints iced the game with a pair of runs in the fifth. Jones, Nate Steffler and Yoonjae Nam recorded consecutive singles, and Ruckman scored two more runs for the Saints. Lincoln cut into the Maryville lead with four scores in the top of the sixth. The Saints kept LU off the scoreboard the rest of the day to post a 10-5 victory. Julian Langford was credited with the win, while Steve Reynolds threw three shutout innings to notch the save.

The Saints even their record at 6-6 on the year, while Lincoln remains winless at 0-9.
