Mitch Carriger smacked a home run in consecutive games as the Maryville baseball team recorded nine runs in both ends of a doubleheader sweep over William Jewell Saturday afternoon. The Saints won the first game 9-4 and won a 9-8 slugfest in the finale. The teams wrap up the series Sunday at Lindenwood University starting at Noon.

The Saints tallied single runs in the first and fourth to snare a 2-0 lead. In their first at-bat, Carriger singled and took second on a Cardinals' miscue. He moved to third on
Zack Ruckman's basehit. Carriger then swiped home for the game's first run.
Dalton Schumer started the fourth inning with a double and scored on
Sean Murphy's RBI single back up the middle for a 2-0 edge. WJC tallied its first run in the sixth, and took the lead after a two-run homer.

The Saints responded with two in the seventh inning. Conner Markell and Carriger both reached on singles, and
Troy Payton lashed a double to left center that drove both in for a 4-3 advantage. Payton took third on a wild pitch, and Ruckman delivered the RBI single for a 5-3 cushion. The Saints sealed the win with four runs in the eighth. Markell had an RBI single, and Carriger's three-run homer put the game out of reach as he capped a 4-for-5 outing.

Maryville won a game two that saw at least one run score in every inning. Carriger launched a solo homer on the second pitch he saw for a quick 1-0 led. In the second,
Garrett Taylor drilled a double to left that brought home
Louis Niemerg and
Tyler Catlett for a 3-0 margin. The Cardinals got two runs back in the top of the third via a two-run homer, then tied the game in the fourth frame on a solo shot.

The Saints jumped back ahead with four runs in the fifth.
Tyler Omlid and Taylor started the frame with singles, and Carriger had an RBI grounder. Taylor then scored on a wild pitch. Ruckman reached on a fielder's choice before Schumer blasted a two-run homer to left as Maryville went up 7-3. The Cardinals forced a 7-7 tie in the top of the sixth with four runs on five hits. The Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth before Payton singled in the game-winning runs as Taylor and Omlid scored. The Cardinals hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh but
Robbie Gordon retired the final three batters to preserve the win for Brandon Downey.
