The Maryville women's tennis team began the 2017 portion of its season with a match at NCAA Division I squad Western Illinois but was dealt a 6-3 setback in Galesburg, Ill., Sunday afternoon.
The Saints won two of the three doubles matches to start the day. Andrea Fandino and Lina Kunert posted a 6-4 victory at No. 2. Sarah Etter and Lucy Horbatowski squeaked out a 7-6 decision at the third doubles slot. Western Illinois prevailed in the No. 1 position.Â
However, WIU won five of the singles matches to eventually take the overall contest. Puck Vlaskamp won the first set of her No. 2 singles match, while Horbatowski was the lone Saint to record a win as she claimed a 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 decision.
Maryville is next in action at a tournament hosted by Missouri Western Feb. 18-19, in St. Joseph, Mo.
