The Maryville women's tennis team posted a 2-1 mark at the Missouri Western Winter Invitational. The Saints rolled to a 5-1 win over the hosts, beat Newman 5-3 before dropping a 5-3 decision versus Arkansas Tech.
In the first match, the Saints swept all three doubles matches to grab the early lead and took two singles contests to close out the opener.
Sarah Etter and
Lucy Horbatowski notched the first point with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, and Sanda Hinterberger and
Lina Kunert teamed up for an 8-4 win at the No. 2 doubles slot.
Rebekah Anderson and
Puck Vlaskamp made it a clean sweep of doubles with an 8-4 triumph at the top doubles match up. Missouri Western won its only point of the match by taking the No. 4 singles point before the Saints clinched the match.
Kine Kleppe recorded a 7-5, 6-4 triumph in the fifth singles match. Hinterberger ended the match with a three-set 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Against Newman, Etter and Kleppe won the first point at No. 3 doubles via an 8-6 scoreline. Newman took the point at No. 1 but Hinterberger/Kunert also posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Kleppe cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, and Vlaskamp rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory at the second singles match. Etter closed out the victory with a key win at No. 1 singles as she notched a 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 victory.
In the finale against Arkansas Tech, the Saints fell behind 2-0 before the duo of Anderson and Vlaskamp won the No. 1 doubles point in a tiebreak. Hinterberger won her tilt at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match at 2-2. However, the Saints did not record another point in the match as ATU notched the victory.
The Saints are next in action as they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., for three matches this week.
