Normandy, Mo. - Nicole Pafundi stormed to the title of the A Singles draw at the UMSL Fall Invitational in north St. Louis to highlight the Maryville women's tennis team's tournament. Ashley Dowden battled to reach the finals of the B Singles draw.
Pafundi lost just five games in her first two matches before downing UMSL's Marina Predinger 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the title match, Pafundi defeated another Triton, Salome Bleuler, in a 6-2, 6-3 decision to win the bracket.
Dowden posted a 6-0, 6-2 win to start her tournament and followed with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) victory to advance to the semis. Facing teammate Maya Biesterfeld, Dowden emerged with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-3 win. After dropping the first set for the B Draw title, Dowden pushed the match to a third set with a 6-4 win. However, UMSL's Bianca Buie edged Dowden 11-9 in the final set.
The Saints close their fall season with a match at Lindenwood Wednesday, Oct. 10.
