Summary
Southern Indiana's Alex Stein sank a jumper with 2.6 seconds left as the Screaming Eagles squeezed past Maryville 61-59 in a thrilling Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Evansville, Ind., Thursday night. Neither team led by more than seven points in a game that featured 21 lead changes and 15 ties.
What Happened
The score was deadlocked at 15-15 when the Saints surged ahead with a 7-0 run. Casey Teson scored a layup and followed with a 3-pointer. Robin Thompson sank two free throws as Maryville went up 22-15, the largest lead of the day by either team. USI scored eight straight to take the lead. Nolan Berry scored to push the Saints back ahead 24-23. The Screaming Eagles led 32-31 but Maryville scored the final four points of the half. Jimmy Barton made a jumper, and two Berry free throws were good for a 35-32 lead.
The home squad edged ahead 41-39 until Berry answered with seven consecutive points. He converted four charity tosses and drained a 3-pointer for a 46-41 lead with 14:24 to play. USI tied the game at 46-all with 12:39 to play. From that point on, neither team led by more than three points in a taut contest. The Saints were down 57-54 at the 4:04 mark but Teson scored on a three-point play to tie the game. USI retook a 59-57 edge, and Forrester Sims tied the game with drive down the left lane with 44 seconds left. The Saints defense forced two misses but USI kept possession. Stein dribbled to the right side and dropped in a 10-foot jumper for the final points.
