Box Score The Maryville men's lacrosse team scored the first five goals and cruised to a 20-5 victory in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Shorter Friday night in Rome, Ga. Lucas Shafer finished with six goals and three assists, while Ty Wenck recorded five goals and added one assist. Goalie Liam Coyle played nearly three quarters and surrendered just two goals.
The Saints won the opening face-off and Shafer fired in the first goal of the game in just 43 seconds. He tallied again just short of the four-minute mark to double the Maryville lead. Jayden Fraser scored at the 9:34 mark, and Wenck recorded back-to-back goals for a 5-0 advantage. Shorter scored in the final seconds of the first quarter to trim the Maryville lead to 5-1.
Zach Steltzer opened the scoring in the second, and Shafer connected twice for an 8-1 edge. Wenck and Shafer added goals midway through the period as the Saints reached double figures. Fraser and Wenck tallied as Maryville's margin stood at 12-1 at halftime. Maryville put the game away with five goals to start the third quarter and went up 19-2 after 45 minutes of action.
The Saints stretched their program best winning streak to four straight and improved to 5-1 this season, 1-0 in the GLVC. Shorter drops to 0-7, 0-1 in the league. Maryville is back in action Sunday with a contest at Montevallo.
