Kaitlyn Cadrain's 22-save shutout led Maryville University past Arizona State University 2-0 in the first round of the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament on Thursday morning. Cadrain held up first-period goals from
Addison Cooper and
Sydney Poisson to push the sixth-seeded Saints into the second round on Saturday, March 18.
Seventh-seeded Arizona State got an early break with a powerplay after a minor checking penalty by
Emma Gerwitz at 4:38 in the first. The Saints killed off the man advantage and responded with a goal a few minutes later. Collen O'Leary found
Addison Cooper to open the scoring at 10:14.
Maryville continued to fire shots on the net, outshooting the Sun Devils 14-7 in the first period. It paid off again at 19:25 when
Sydney Poisson sent the Saints into the first intermission with a goal on assists by
Sarah Brooks and Gerwitz.
The Saints were kept quiet in the second period despite getting two powerplay opportunities and outshooting the Sun Devils 14-5. ASU made a push in the third with 10 shots on goal, but Cadrain was up to the task, finishing off the first-round shutout with 22 total saves.
