Saints Battle DI Foes at IU Early Bird

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Maryville track and field teams impressed today at the Indiana University hosted IU Early Bird Meet. The Saints posting multiple wins and podium finishes against a stacked NCAA DI field at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
 
Sarai Brown and Harry Mitchell were the two standouts on the day. Brown kept her NCAA goals moving ahead, adding a 200-meter NCAA provisional mark as well as the race win to her resume this season. Mitchell, a true freshman, tore it up in the 200 and the 400, setting a school record in 200.
 
INS & OUTS
Outside of winning and getting the provo in the 200, Brown also inched up her own school record in the event, beating out runners from Cincinnati, Indiana and Butler in the race. She was joined by Rickalia Goss who placed sixth in just her first collegiate 200. Goss later added a sixth-place finish in the long jump.
 
Mallorie Metzger was the top NCAA DII runner for the mile, with her PR time of 5:09.8 being good enough for fourth. Her fellow cross-country teammate, Illene Limberg, made her track debut in Bloomington, Ind., grabbing second in the 3000 meter.
 
Liz Vermillion rounded out the notables for the women's team, earning fourth in the shot put and third in the weight throw. That weight throw mark of 14.52 was good enough for a PR for Vermillion.
 
Mitchell, Kanden Bolton and Sam Gleason were the trio that lit it up for the Saints men's team. Mitchell continues to impress in his freshman season. She placed third in the 200 meter, crossing with a time of 21.87 for a PR, setting the school record as well, last help by Nathan Hippard from 2024. He went on to do the same placement in the 400 with a PR time of 48.84. In the 200, Mitchell outpaced runners from IU, SLU and Butler on route to his podium finish in both events.
 
Sam Gleason won the 5K with a time of 15:40.38, also earning a PR, while Kanden Bolton stays hot in the long jump, placing first with a mark of 7.17. His mark came on his fifth leap. Bolton beat out six DI jumpers on route to the title. He did well as well in the triple jump, placing third with a 14.29 PR.
 
Other notables included Deonte Anthony placing ninth in both the 200 and 400, his first time running the events for Maryville. Ladarius Williams slotted eighth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.35. For throws, Ja'Len Thomas grabbed a season best toss in the shot put with a 14.09 mark.

The Saints are wrapped up for their 2025 slate. They return Friday, Jan. 16, for the Mizzou Show Me Showdown in Columbia, Mo.
