Summary
Nolan Berry poured in a career-high 30 points but the Maryville men's basketball team lost its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at William Jewell 107-86. Berry's performance is the first time a Maryville player has scored at least 30 points in a game since Marvin Grant-Clark tallied 37 points at Indianapolis Jan. 7, 2016. Robin Thompson recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
What Happened
The Saints scored nine of the first 11 points of the game to grab the early momentum. Berry sank a 3-pointer to open the game, and after a WJC score, he threw down a dunk. Forrester Sims converted a jumper, and Thompson scored inside for a 9-2 lead after three minutes. The Saints were still up 17-10 before the Cardinals tallied 11 straight to take their first lead. Teehjay Bogan and Berry scored layups to cut the WJC led to 26-23. The Saints went back up 33-32 after a Jimmy Barton layup and 3-pointer by Bogan. Thompson powered in a dunk at the 3:09 mark for a 37-35 advantage. However, The Cardinals took a 49-42 lead at halftime.
Thompson scored three straight baskets to start the second half as Maryville closed to 49-48. The Saints were still only down one 51-50 after a Berry layup. However, the Cardinals went on a 14-0 run to take a lead 65-50. The Saints got as close as 83-73 on a Sims bucket at the 8:41 mark but could not trim the deficit to single digits. Berry finished 12-of-14 from the field.
