Box Score 2 Boliver, Mo. – The Maryville University baseball team earned a split this afternoon with Southwest Baptist as the Saints fell to the Bearcats in game one 11-10, but bounced back and won the nightcap 16-2 in Boliver, Mo.
After a quiet first three innings, the Saints cracked the scoreboard as
Mitch Carriger singled and moved to second on a
Tyler Catlett single through the left side. Carriger scored on a
Connor Markell single while Catlett came across on a fielder's choice to give the Saints the early 2-0 lead.
After the Bearcats put up four runs in their half of the fourth, Maryville battled back with a pair of runs in the fifth as Danny Covert drew a walk and scored on a
Zack Ruckman triple to deep centerfield and then Ruckman scored on a
Matt Scheibel single to even the game at 4-4.
The Bearcats took advantage of five hits over the next two innings to take a 10-4 lead into the top of the seventh inning. The Saints strung together five hits including a
Louis Niemerg three-run blast to even the contest at 10-10 before SBU scored the winning run on a walk-off homer to right field.
Zach Morrisey suffered his first loss of the year in relief for the Saints while Carriger finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Catlett was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a run batted in.
Maryville did not waste any time in the second game as the Saints scored three runs in the first frame and they blew the game wide open by scoring five runs in the fifth and another four runs in the seventh. The Saints used the long ball in the victory by drilling four home runs in the win with Catlett hitting a pair of long balls and Neimerg and Ruckman each added a roundtripper.
Arcente Stone gained the win for the Saints as they improved to 2-4 on the season. Catlett added five runs batted in to go with 4-for-5 afternoon.
The Saints finish up the road trip tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for noon.
