Saints fall short at Southwest Baptist 11-10

Boliver, Mo. – Danny Covert pounded out five hits on the afternoon as the Maryville baseball team fell to Southwest Baptist University 11-10 in a wild affair in Boliver, Mo.

The Saints got things started quickly in the first inning as Covert drove in Connor Mercier with a double to left to put the Saints ahead 1-0. Covert scored the Saints second run of the inning as Tyler Catlett drew a walk and Mitch Carriger gave Maryville a 3-0 advantage when he scored on a wild pitch.

The Bearcats plated four runs in the third inning to grab a 4-3 lead, but the Saints scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to retake the lead at 6-4. Southwest Baptist answered in their half of the sixth inning as the Bearcats drove in four more runs to take an 8-6 lead.

Dalton Schumer opened the top of the seventh with a triple and scored on a Catlett double down the right field line to cut the Bearcat lead to 8-7. Catlett moved up to third on a wild pitch and tied the game on a Markell single with no outs. The Saints again grabbed the lead as Markell came home on a walk to Covert and then Maryville plated another run as Zack Ruckman scored on the Carriger sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Saints a 10-8 lead.

The Bearcats scored two more runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 10-10 and plated the winning run in the eighth inning on a hit by a pitch.

Covert finished the afternoon going 5-for-5 with four doubles and four runs batted in while both Catlett and Markell each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's.
