Memphis, Tenn. – The Saints baseball team pounded out 17 hits en route to a 13-3 victory over Christian Brothers University in seven innings Tuesday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field in Memphis, Tenn., to extend their winning streak to five games.
Maryville got off to another fast start as the Saints put three runs across in the first inning. Danny Covert got things going with a one-out double and then scored when
Cody Klotz singled up the middle to give the Saints the early 1-0 lead. Klotz came across to score as
Mitch Carriger singled and scored on a fielding error to give Maryville a 2-0 lead and then scored on a
Tyler Catlett double down the left field line to give Maryville an early 3-0 advantage.
The Saints added a pair of runs in the second frame on a Covert RBI single to left field to score
Troy Payton and then
Zack Ruckman scored on a Carriger free pass to give a 5-0 lead. The Bucs cut into the Maryville lead by plating a run in the home half of the second, but the Saints got the run right back in the third as
Camdon Mercier scored on another CBU error to give the Maryville a 6-1 advantage after three innings.
After Maryville added another run in the fourth inning, the Saints plated five runs in the fifth inning with Ruckman scoring on a Klotz groundout and then Carriger drilled his fifth home run of the year over the right center field fence to give Maryville a 10-1 lead. Maryville added the fifth run of the inning as
DeShawn Lindsey hammered the Saints sixth double of the contest to center field and scored on a Bucs miscue to give Maryville a 11-1 lead. The Saints added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to improve to 7-5 on the year.
Clayton Luley notched his second win of the year scattering a pair of hits and striking out five CBU batters. Carriger paced the Saints offense by going 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a pair of walks while Covert went 3-for 5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Klotz and Catlett added a pair of RBI's in the affair.
Maryville closes out the brief two-game set with the Bucs on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Memphis.
