INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville University women's track & field placed seventh of 11 teams at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships over the weekend. The Saints had two earn medals with
Lorena Alanso Sanchez in the 400m and
Nia Lyles in the shot put.
Sanchez, a freshman from Salamanca, Spain, earned the bronze in the 400m dash after a 1:00.06 finish to earn six points for the Saints. Lyles continued an impressive 2022-23 season as well, earning third place with a mark of 13.35m in the shot put. She additionally earned five points for the Saints in the weight throw with a fourth-place finish (15.78m).
Freshman
Sarai Brown finished the 60m dash in 7.71 to take fifth place to add four points to the Saints' tally. Contributions from
Casie Cullinane's (3.13m) and
Ellie Schilling's (2.98m) performances in the pole vault added to the overall score as well.
In total, Maryville posted 39 points to take seventh of 11 at the GLVC Championships, finishing a few points shy of Missouri S&T and Truman State. At the end of the meet, Abby Dreyer was selected as the team's GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Individual Award Honoree. She is now eligible to become one of the school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
The track & field campaign continues with the first outdoor meet of the season, the Miner Invitational, running from March 24-25 in Rolla, Mo.
