The 2011-12 women’s basketball squad was the first Maryville team to win a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship and first to earn a bid to a Division II NCAA Championship. The squad defeated city-rival UMSL to begin the 2012 GLVC Tournament run and downed No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky highlighted by Shelby Miller’s 34-point performance. The Saints upset top-seed Quincy 70-66 to reach the championship game and beat Kentucky Wesleyan 75-62 to win the GLVC title. Miller was named Tournament MVP, becoming first freshman to ever garner the award. The team won the 2012 GLVC Sportsmanship Award and ranked 16th in the WBCA Academic Top 25. The Saints featured forward Abby Duethman who earned All-American honors and was named GLVC Player of the Year in 2013. Miller was a two-time first-team All-GLVC selection and finished as the team’s all-time leading scorer with 1,612 points. Joann Thompson was a standout defender and twice voted to the GLVC All-Defensive team. Directing the team was head coach Chris Ellis, Maryville alum from the class of 1984. He was winningest coach in program history and was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012.
