Al lettered in basketball all three years he attended Maryville and played one season of baseball. He ranks as Maryville's fourth-best all-time scoring leader with 1,332 points. He had 899 rebounds and holds a field goal percentage of .489 in his career. His athletic honors include being named MVP of the SLACAA Conference Tournament in 1978, 1979 and 1980. He was selected to play on a team that represented the U.S. in Australia.
