Marissa Essner Johnson was a softball player in 2004 and 2005 for the Saints. She became just the third Maryville softball member to earn All-America honors when she was a second-team selection in 2005.
Essner was a first-team All-Midwest Region and first-team All-Conference in 2004 and 2005 and named to the 2005 All-SLIAC Tournament squad. She earned the SLIAC Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year 2004 and helped guide the Saints to the NCAA Division III Tournament. As a hitter, Essner still ranks in the top 10 in home runs (17), batting average (.364), RBIs (81), total bases (182), doubles (23) and runs scored (66). In addition, she was an excellent pitcher and ranks in the top 10 wins (26), shutouts (7), ERA (2.90) and strikeouts (186)
